Principal’s Message

Caroline Booth

The holidays are upon us and I think you’ll agree the break has been well earned by our hardworking students. There has been much to keep them occupied this term: student leader elections, a swimming carnival and our very first Colour Explosion being just a few examples. Of course, these extra-curricular activities are in addition to the work they undertake in the classroom. Now that we are at the end of this busy term, I would like to acknowledge the wonderful work our teachers do in providing stimulating teaching and learning activities for our students. This has been perfectly illustrated by the class assemblies we have been treated to so far. Each presentation has showcased not only the high standards the children are achieving, but also just how engaged and inspired they are. Each class has relished the opportunity to share their work and what we have seen has been pretty diverse. We were given a taste of Room 5’s adventure stories through their ‘Adventure at Sandy Cove’, Room 12 incorporated digital technologies to show the importance of embracing inclusivity and Room 9 demonstrated how they use mental strategies to solve maths problems. Each assembly has been very impressive and a great way for the audience to view the innovative practices our teachers are applying to their teaching. I’m sure I’m not alone in looking forward to what’s on offer in next term’s assemblies.

In the meantime, I hope you all manage to enjoy a break from your busy schedules over the next fortnight and enjoy this break with your children. Have a happy and safe holiday and we will see you on Tuesday 30th April.

Assembly - Room 9

We left Room 9’s assembly with a whole range of strategies to help us solve maths problems. Most importantly, all of the strategies could be done in our heads. The students explained each one perfectly; they clearly know what they’re talking about when it comes to maths. Well done Room 9. We loved your informative assembly.

Aussie of the Month

Kaden displays kindness and compassion towards all class members. He is an inclusive friend to everyone. Kaden is a team player who always considers the happiness of the members of the group he is playing with at recess and lunchtime. He sets a fine example to others by following school rules and displaying a positive attitude. Well done Kaden!

Colour Explosion Update

Once again, we would like to give a big thank you to Di Thorby for her work in organising the Colour Explosion. In addition to the great fun had by all, we raised just over $5000. This has paid for our new long jump pit which will be put to good use during our athletics programme in the coming months. As always, thank you to all parents for wholeheartedly supporting this event. Without your backing, it would not have been as successful.

Awesome Kids’ Morning Tea

Here are latest guests for the termly Awesome Kid’s Morning tea. Teachers nominate 2 students from their class to join Ms Booth and Mr Adlam for a sumptuous feast. It’s a real honour to be chosen because at Mullaloo Heights, as you know, there are many suitable candidates. Thank you to parents who prepared the goodies for this special treat.

Enjoying our just reward for being awesome kids

Parent Traps - By Professor Matt Sanders

It’s tough being a parent but it’s easy to fall into one of the common parenting traps.

The criticism trap is when there are frequent power struggles with your child. The situations escalate from criticising to threatening and yelling. This type of discipline often backfires. The parent’s anger makes the child and parent resentful and hostile. If these kinds of battles take place frequently, it’s time to try a new way of handling the situation.

The “leave them alone” trap involves the parent simply not acknowledging their child when they are behaving well. If good behaviour is taken for granted it may be replaced with the misbehaviour that receives more attention. A basic principle of positive parenting is to praise behaviours you would like to see more often.

The “for the sake of the children” trap occurs when parents in unhappy marriages stick doggedly to the same marriage routines, for the sake of the children, rather than addressing the problems constructively.

The perfect parent trap. There is no such thing as a perfect parent and trying to be one will only lead to disappointment, resentment, guilt, and feelings of inadequacy.

The martyr trap is one where parents become so over-involved in the task of parenting they neglect their own needs. The parents’ relationship suffers and may end in feelings of dissatisfaction and resentment. Quality parenting can only happen when adults have their own lives in balance.

Please express your interest in attending a whole day Seminar Series in Term 3 Week 2- Thursday 1st August 2019 9am-2:30pm, in the Science/Art room – Morning tea and lunch provided. Contact Mullaloo Heights PS on (08)6206 2100

Dogs on School Grounds

We would like to remind you that dogs are not to be brought onto school grounds. A couple of years ago, we had an incident where a dog tied up near the Early Childhood Block nipped a small child. While this is very unfortunate, it could easily have been avoided. Dogs will often react differently around large groups of people and, regardless of size or temperament, can cause both physical and emotional harm. It is worth remembering that there are children who are frightened of dogs, no matter how friendly their owner perceives them to be. These children have the right to feel safe while at school. Because of this, please ensure that dogs are not brought along to school, even if they are on a lead. Thank you for your support and understanding with regard to this.

Chaplain’s Corner

Jess Smith

Dear Parents,

I can’t believe the first term is over already!

We’ve had a great start to the year with a focus on conflict and bullying strategies. All the students have now learnt the BUZ strategies for resolving conflict and bully-proofing themselves.

The year 6 girls have started girls club and so far they’ve had a dodgeball competition and made beautiful collages at lunchtime.

Many of us spend a large part of our days at work so your workplace and how we go about doing our work has a substantial impact on our mental health.

While much of our working environment is determined by others, individually we can take steps that will help to protect and enhance our mental health and wellbeing.

Please see the article below from Beyond Blue about taking care of yourself through managing your work role:

https://www.headsup.org.au/your-mental-health/taking-care-of-yourself-and-staying-well/at-work

I hope you have a great and safe holiday and Happy Easter in advance.
