Principal’s Message

The term is ending in a frenzy of activity. Last week, we celebrated Book Week and what a week it was! There was a real positive vibe around school, a direct by-product of the enthusiasm of our students and the community. This was manifested in many ways: the library was filled daily with everyone attempting to ‘guess the book’, the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party was stocked with mountains of food and attended by guests wearing crazy hats and our children worked throughout the week to create wonderful book covers and character profiles inspired by interesting books.

This complete engagement in events and activities is the best reward is for organising something like Book Week. It is a distinguishing feature of the Mullaloo Heights school community and truly enhances programmes we provide at school. Thank you! It goes without saying that our Book Week assembly was attended by a huge variety of book characters books, as parents once again rose to the challenge of providing creative costumes. This added to the atmosphere of this special finale to the week and I can honestly say, inspired our wonderful actors to provide a rather energetic performance of ‘The Jolly Postman’, complete with some very questionable ‘flossing’. All staff left school on Friday feeling lucky to work in such a special place. In case you missed out on any of our Book Week activities, we have added galleries of photos below; in this way, you can still get a taste of the fun.

There are still a couple of things to look forward to; namely the Interschool Carnival, our ‘Dress as a Farmer’ fundraiser day in the last week and the termly, Awesome Kids Morning Tea.

Best Wishes,

Caroline Booth
Principal

Book Week Memories

Here are some memories of our fabulous Book Week, last week.

Literacy Rotation

Children from PP to Year 6 were organised into mixed age groups and worked through 10 fun activities inspired by books. It was lovely to see our older students helping younger ones to complete each task. What great students we have at Mullaloo Heights.

Treasure Hunt

Our PP-4 students enjoyed the musical extravaganza, Treasure Hunt, during Book Week. This performance combined extracts from the Children’s Book Council Award (CBCA) shortlisted books with song and dance in this entertaining production.

Mad Hatter’s Tea Party

The sun came out just in time, the food was delicious and the guests were wonderful: our mad hatter’s tea party, once again, was a great success! Thank you, parents, for providing us with a mountain of food. We can safely say, by the end of lunch, we couldn’t eat another morsel!

Guess the Book

Each day, cryptic clues were displayed in the library, teasing the students to try and guess the related book. Our students love a challenge so the library was full to capacity every morning while they excitedly attempted to solve the puzzle of the day.

Special Assembly

We got a chance to see everyone’s amazing costumes during our special Book Week assembly. Earlier that morning, our in-house judge wandered around school viewing the creativity and imagination employed to make these fabulous outfits. After much head scratching and severe indecision, a couple of outstanding costumes were selected by our judges. We think they made some great choices – see below for more details.

Prizes were also awarded for our Book Week writing competition. Students designed book covers inspired by well-loved books, complete with a persuasive blurb or character profiles. The standard was very high, but a number of deserving winners were selected. Their work is currently displayed in the front office on the ‘Board of Excellence’- make sure you have a look next time you’re in. Once winners were announced and prizes presented, the whole school settled down for a special performance of ‘The Jolly Postman’ by our talented teachers. We may be biased, but we think this finished Book Week in a perfect way. We’re already looking forward to next year.

Triple P – Positive Parenting Program

Self-esteem - By Professor Matt Sanders

Teenagers who have healthy self-esteem are likely to be happy, cooperative, successful at school and make friends easily. They are fun people to be around because they are eager to learn and succeed, and because they cope with stress effectively.

However self-esteem doesn’t come built-in at birth. As parents, it is important that we help our teens develop a true sense of their own strengths and weaknesses.

Teenagers who receive plenty of praise and encouragement feel good about themselves. A teen who believes their parents have confidence in them by allowing them to do certain things by themselves will learn confidence. Telling your teenager you love them and spending time with them will help your teenager feel valued and cared for.

It is important also to encourage teens to follow a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise and good grooming habits help teenager develop a positive image of themselves. And when your teenager achieves at something you can let them know that they should feel good about such accomplishments — it is okay to be different and be good at different things.

Parenting Tip: Laughter really is a great medicine. Teenagers, who feel good about themselves laugh spontaneously, develop a sense of humour and learn to tell funny stories. Encourage your teenager to laugh by listening to their stories and having fun together.
