Principal’s Message
We have had a great start to Term 3, with our students’ enthusiasm and hard work paying dividends. One example is our recent Athletics Carnival which was another roaring success! Perhaps inspired by the one day in the whole week when the sun shone, our students gave their all when participating in each event. Their enthusiasm and sportsmanship was infectious, making the day a lovely experience for all. Thank you to Mrs Thorby who applied her considerable organisational skills to ensure the day ran smoothly. Much gratitude also goes to all parents and staff members who helped set things up for the day, ran a fundraising sausage sizzle and cake stall and, most importantly, were there at the end to pack everything away.
Another example is the recent Interschool Cross Country Competition in which a number of our students participated. As always, they embraced the event with zeal, determined to do their best, regardless of whether they won. We received very positive feedback regarding the way in which our students conducted themselves while participating at Padbury. They were well mannered and respectful to both adults and other students taking part and this was commented on. While representing our school, our students always rise to the occasion, wearing their uniform with pride and explicitly displaying our school values.
Sport may have been the recent focus, but literature and Science are soon to take over. This week, students have been enjoying Science Week, while teachers have been preparing for Book Week - our favourite way of celebrating literature. Please make a note of key dates for this event later in the newsletter. More detailed information will be available soon. This will let you know exactly what is happening so that you can join in the fun.

Room 8 Assembly
The students in Room 8 gave us a fantastic lesson about verbs during their assembly last week. When we were at school, grammar was, dare we say, a little bit boring. However, it seems things have definitely changed, especially when it’s our Pre-Primary and Year 1 students doing the teaching. There were songs, actions and a couple of special dances to help us remember what a verb is and when to use it. We can safely say this was a grammar lesson enjoyed by all!

2018 Faction Jumps & Throws
Students warmed up for the Athletics carnival by giving their all in the Jumps and Throws competition the day before. Enjoy photos of them in action.

2018 Faction Athletics Carnival
This year’s carnival was held on Thursday, 26th July, and we could not have asked for a more perfect day for it to be held on!
A big ‘Thank you’ goes out to:
- All the students for their hard work on the day.
- To the staff and students for the setting up and packing away of all the equipment and running of the carnival.
- To the parents who volunteered their time to help on the day.
And what could we do without the P&C! Thank you to the P&C and parent helpers, for providing the students with a free icy-pole on the day and for organising the yummy cake stall and sausage sizzle.

Inter-School Cross Country
The Inter school cross country carnival was held on Friday, 3rd September, at McDonald Reserve in Padbury. The students braved a cold, windy, wintry day and I was very proud of their efforts considering the challenging conditions.
Thank you to Mr Adlam and Mrs Smith for their help on the day and to all the parents who were able to support our runners!
We had 2 ribbon placings - Lexi (year 4) and Connor (year 5), who came 4th in their races. Many of our students placed in the top 15th!
Book Week is Coming
Book Week takes place from Monday 27th to 31st August and is going to be a great week. Put the following key dates in your diary. More detailed information will be available in our next newsletter.
- EXCURSION: Y5/6 Visit to Author and Illustrator Kelly Canby - Thursday 23rd August
Students in Y5/6 will meet Kelly Canby, author and illustrator of a number of bestselling books. During this session, she will be reading from her latest book, The Hole Story, and answering any questions the students may have. This will take place at Joondalup Library on Thursday 23rd August - a pre Book Week taster of the fun to come. Letters have been sent out earlier this week.
- INCURSION: PP-Y4 Students watch Treasure Hunt – Tuesday 28th August
Students from Pre-primary to Year 4 get to watch a musical extravaganza based on the treasures that books bring. Aptly entitled Treasure Hunt, this performance incorporates shortlisted titles from the Children’s Book Council Awards for 2018 into an action packed adventure that promotes reading, not just as entertainment, but also as a means of understanding the world around us. The cost for this incursion is usually $6.00. However the P&C are paying half for every child bringing the cost to $3.00. Notes with more information have been sent out this week. Collect one from the office if you have mislaid yours.
- Mad Hatter’s Tea Party – Thursday 30th August
You will receive your special invitation to this wacky lunch in the Undercover Area next week. All parents are welcome to come and join us for a bite to eat, as long as you don a silly hat. Please send a plate to share – one per family (sweet for girls, savoury for boys) and join the fun. See you there at 12:15pm.
- Extreme Reading Display - Treasure Hunt
This year’s challenge is for the students to fill a Treasure Box with books and stories they have loved. Each child has been given a treasure box template and coins this week. All they need to do now is to fill their coins with drawings of books, characters, settings or anything that relates to their favourite literature and glue them into their treasure box. Once complete, all pictures should be handed in to the office so that they can be displayed in the Undercover Area during Book Week.
- Dress as your favourite book character – Friday 31st August
Students get to leave their uniform at home and spend the day dressed as a favourite book character. Prizes will be awarded for creative costumes.
- Book Assembly – Friday 31st August
We will be having a special assembly at 11:15am to view everyone’s costumes. Prizes for our annual writing competition and most creative dress ups will also be presented. We will conclude the assembly and Book Week with a special performance of ‘Jolly Postman Pat’.

Triple P – Positive Parenting Program
Positively Parenting Teenagers By Professor Matt Sanders
As a parent, you want to do the best for your child, but how do you know what’s right? What do you do when your teenager constantly answers back or starts staying out late? How do you prepare your Senior for Schoolies Week? What if your child is being bullied?
This year in the Mullaloo Heights PS newsletter, I will share some of Triple P’s proven tips for the best ways to handle common teenage problems. From battling disobedience to encouraging homework routines, I’ll cover those everyday issues to help you work out some strategies to suit your family.
I’ll highlight common “parent traps” and hopefully make the very important job of raising kids as enjoyable and rewarding as possible.
But remember, parenting is sometimes hard work and it may take time to tackle more difficult problems. The good news is that help is always at hand.
Professor Matt Sanders is founder of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program®. For more information go to the link below.

Chaplain’s Corner
Dear Parents,
I can’t believe how fast the year has gone! I hope Term 3 is off to a good start for you and your families.
Last term I ran a program called ‘Think Happy, Be Happy’ with middle school students to help them with facing worries and fears and to develop skills of resiliency and positive thinking. All the students received their own ‘Think Happy, Be Happy’ booklet full of strategies and ideas for days when they are feeling worried or nervous. I have also facilitated some small group activities with Year 6 Students to help them develop similar skills and to assist them in their transition into High School.
Lunchtimes have also been full of excitement for students as year 2’s have taken part in fun workshops and activities and older students have loved doing dodgeball and crafts at lunchtime.
This term I will be continuing my small group activities with the older students, as well as running friendships clubs for groups of girls. I am looking forward to seeing the students develop skills of resiliency and conflict resolution.
Please see the article below: “7 phrases to avoid when kids are anxious” by Michael Grose:
‘Talking with kids when they are anxious can be hard work for parents and teachers. Sometimes just one word out of place or spoken with the wrong tone of voice can get a child’s back up, upset them or make them uncooperative. In this article there are some common errors and what to say instead’:
