Principal’s Message
Welcome back! I trust you had a relaxing break with plenty of time to recharge ready for Term 2. There’s certainly a lot to look forward to this term for sports enthusiasts, with the Faction Cross Country, Lightning Carnival and Swimming lessons all taking place. Lovers of the arts and culture will enjoy our Musica Viva incursion and, of course, our Year 6 students will get to experience life on camp. The term will finish with an opportunity for the whole school to learn more about Aboriginal culture and history during our NAIDOC Week. It’s going to be an interesting term!
On a more serious note, NAPLAN testing in literacy and numeracy begins next Tuesday for our Year 3 and 5 students. This can often be a stressful time, with some students feeling intense pressure to do well. As teachers and parents, we need to remind them that our expectation is that they do the very best they can and nothing more. We should also consider that NAPLAN gives us information regarding student achievement at a particular point in time. While this is useful in allowing teachers to plan appropriate programs, it will always be taken in the context of other assessment information gained throughout the year as a result of classroom based work. At Mullaloo Heights, the acquisition of literacy and numeracy skills is a priority and a strong focus of our teaching. Our homework program, incorporating, Mathletics and Literacy Pro/Home Reading, supports this. However, we also believe that a broad and balanced education is essential and encourage parents to supplement homework with other activities when children are out of school, such as sports and aspects of the arts. The pursuit of a wide range of interests will help students to put NAPLAN in perspective.

Chicken Coop
Our chicken coop has recently undertaken a makeover thanks to Craig Strachan and his work mate Tom. They installed a brand new concrete floor last week which means our chickens will have a much cleaner environment in which to live. The chickens will return and receive a warm welcome judging from the smiles on our children’s faces. We would like to thank Craig and Tom for donating their time and expertise freely. You have done an excellent job and have made our children very happy.

Open Day
We will be hosting an Open Day for Kindy & Pre-Primary on Saturday 26th May, 10:00am - 11:30am. This will be a great chance to gain a flavour of the great teaching and play-based learning that is a feature of our Early Childhood Unit. Please pass the word around to any families with children eligible for Kindy of Pre-Primary next year. We would love the opportunity to showcase the wonderful programmes our Early Childhood team provide. See the attached flyer for more information.
We would like to acknowledge Josclyn Landrie for her wonderful work in designing and making advertising banners and A-Frames to promote this event. I am sure that those who have seen them dotted around Mullaloo will agree that she has done an excellent job. Thank you, Josclyn!

Out and About at Mullaloo Heights!
This week, the roving camera paid a visit to Pre-Primary It was a hive of activity with an impressive range of learning activities in evidence. Students were using ipads to take photos and add text using Chatterpix, writing recounts, drawing family members and ‘role playing’ in a veterinarian surgery. Learning in Pre-primary is a lot of fun!

Students on Track
VIP Access to V8 Supercars for some lucky Mullaloo Heights students:
Mullaloo Heights Primary School was lucky enough to secure a limited number of places for our Year 5/6 students to participate in a ‘Students On Track’ Program and spend a day trackside at the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship event held at Barbagallo Raceway in Wanneroo.
This invitation arose after one of our students wrote a letter to Dean Fiore, a Factory Nissan driver. He generously extended the opportunity to a few other students for last Friday, the 4th of May. A lucky draw was held at school and the four excited students were treated to a fantastic day at the races.
It was an incredible opportunity to see how some of the things we learn in class translate to life on and around a race track. We saw practical applications of maths, physical education, science, marketing, event management and engineering in action at a motorsport event. The ‘Students on Track’ program included entry tickets to the circuit and Supercars Paddock, getting us close to the excitement of the Team Transporters and the action of the garages. We received some VIP access from Dean Fiore which included a personal pit tour by Dean showing the students all around these cars and this even included sitting in the driver’s seat! They also participated in a mini Press Conference with Supercar drivers Michael Caruso, Scott McLaughlin and Nick Percat. Plus they got to enjoy the thrills of Supercars practice sessions, support category sessions and other on track entertainment. The day was capped of when the students received a Nissan Supercar Pit Shirt for them as a momento of the day.
A few quotes from the students;
“I loved watching the Super 2’s and Supercars and sitting in the driver’s seat. It was really fun.” (Logan D)
“I liked watching the races, especially the Stadium Trucks.” (Tom E)
“I loved watching the Supercars and the Super 2 cars. Getting shown around the pits was awesome.” (Cash A)
“I enjoyed the races and the Stadium Trucks, one was on two wheels.” (Marcus P)
We would like to thank Dean Fiore, Nissan Racing, Matthew White Motorsport and the WASCC for their support and generosity in making this experience happen.
Please enjoy some photos of this experience.

Remembering the ANZACS
We held our ANZAC Ceremony on Friday the 13th of April, to recognise the significance of this important occasion in our history and to recognise the contribution of all the men and women who have fought and died in wars.
The ceremony began with some of our Year 5/6 students Cohen, Hannah and Toby reading some very thoughtful poems that they had written in class. Our School Leaders, Scarlett and Archer showed great respect when leading this ceremony and described the history behind ANZAC Day and the Gallipoli campaign clearly and carefully.
We would like to thank Mr Rettig, a parent of one of our staff members, Mrs Hood, who spoke to the students about the significance of the occasion and reminded us of the role many individuals play in conflicts situations.
This was followed by the laying of the wreath and the flag protocols by our Student Councillors, a minute silence, the Rouse being played and The Ode was read by Miss Booth. The school choir then sang ‘Fernando’ beautifully.
The ceremony concluded with students placing flowers at the base of the flag pole. During this time, special guest and grandfather to one of our students, Mr Sinclair, played his bagpipes in a very moving performance as students left the area.
The ceremony included a display which was generated by the students. As part of this, each student coloured a red poppy to honour all those who serve or have served in the armed forces.
We are very grateful to Ms Rettig and Mr Sinclair for taking the time to attend our service. We would like to thank all the students and those who attended for their respect during the service.

Rangers Parking and Community Safety – Safety around Schools
Vehicles which park contrary to parking signage around schools are a major hazard and impact on the safety of children, pedestrians and other road users in these areas. It is imperative that drivers are aware of, and park in accordance with, the parking conditions which apply near schools.
As part of the City’s continuing effort to provide a safer environment for everyone City of Joondalup Officers conduct patrols of school parking in the mornings and afternoons throughout the school term.
As part of this initiative Officers use patrol vehicles, which have been fitted with Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras, to capture digital images of vehicles which are parked contrary to parking requirements near schools. Any infringement notices, issued as part of these patrols, will be sent via mail to the registered owner of the vehicle.
Please see the link below for a copy of the City’s School Parking brochure which provides additional information in relation to parking near schools. This is a reminder for parents and caregivers of their responsibility in ensuring that they park correctly near schools.
Chaplain’s Corner
Dear Parents,
I hope you enjoyed the school holidays and that you have settled back into school!
This term I am looking forward to running a program called ‘Think Happy, Be Happy’ with middle school students and this will include activities that will help children deal with things like worries, fears and develop skills of resiliency and positive thinking. I will also run small group activities for older students based on the same ideas.
This term the year 2 and 3 students will get to take part in some workshops and activities during Thursday lunchtimes. The workshops are: EXPLORE – which includes kinetic sand, play dough and other sensory activities, PLAY- which includes board games, card games and sport games, CHILL- which includes a reading corner and quiet activities, and CREATE- which includes card making, colouring, drawing, and other art and craft activities. The year 2’s and 3’s are looking forward to their workshops as are the other year levels.
The year 5 girls have kicked off Girls Club on Fridays and loved competing in dodgeball, they are looking forward to doing creative activities and arts and crafts next week.
Please see the attached article on ‘Finding The Off Switch When Kids Worry’ by Michael Grose:
https://www.parentingideas.com.au/2018/04/finding-the-off-switch-when-kids-worry/
If you’ve ever spent a sleepless night worrying then you’ll know how problems always seem bigger when you keep tossing them around in your head. It can seem like everything is stacked against you. When this happens you’ve got to find the off switch so you can get away from your worries for a while. The same principle holds for children and teenagers when they worry. Their problems just seem to get bigger and they need to turn them off or tone them down so they can ease their anxiety.
Kind regards,
Jess Smith
