Principal’s Message
The holidays are nearly upon us and I think you’ll agree the break has been well earned by our hardworking students. There has been much to keep them busy this term: student elections, a swimming carnival and a lapathon, are just some examples. Harmony Week, our most recent event, allowed our students to consider the ways in which they accept differences and include others.
Our shared lunch was a fantastic representation of cultural diversity and a chance for the school community to get together. I would like to thank all parents for their hard work and creativity in preparing food for this picnic. You prepared a major banquet and it was great to see the students experimenting with the many different flavours on offer. Your hard work and creativity was wholeheartedly enjoyed by all partaking in the treats - students, staff and parents! Thank you as always for your active support for our whole school events. It is this commitment that makes our school such a great place. I would also like to give special mention to all the parents who gave their time to help set up the lunch and clear away at the end. Thank you!
I hope you all manage to enjoy a break from your busy schedules over the next fortnight and enjoy this break with your children. Have a happy and safe holiday and we will see you on Tuesday 1st May.

Memories of Harmony Week
During Harmony Week, we considered our differences and how they contribute to an interesting and diverse society. Enjoy looking at our memories in the picture gallery below.

Very Persuasive Writing
A few weeks ago, we watched Room 12 perform, Dear Mrs La Rue, for their assembly. If you recall, we were promised the chance to read the wonderful writing that would be produced at the end of this literacy unit of work. Well here it is. Click on the link below to read a selection of very persuasive writing. You will be impressed by the vocabulary and clever arguments. Well done, Room 12.
Lapathon
On Wednesday 28th April, the students and staff at MHPS flew into action, dressed as Superheros for our annual Lapathon! It was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic students and family members take part in this event! After completing countless laps of the Oval, students were rewarded with a refreshing icy pole, kindly provided by P&C.
So far over $2700.00 has been raised. This will be used to purchase sporting equipment and new AFL Guernsey's for our Lightning Carnival team. Prizes for the best dressed costumes, highest amount raised and lucky dip draw will be presented in Term 2.
Thank you for everyone's support and generosity in this fundraiser.

Triple P Parenting Program
Positive Parenting - by Professor Matt Sanders
It’s tough being a parent but it’s easy to fall into one of the common parenting traps.
Parent Traps
The criticism trap is when there are frequent power struggles with your child. The situations escalate from criticising to threatening and yelling. This type of discipline often backfires. The parent’s anger makes the child and parent resentful and hostile. If these kinds of battles take place frequently, it’s time to try a new way of handling the situation.
The “leave them alone” trap involves the parent simply not acknowledging their child when they are behaving well. If good behaviour is taken for granted it may be replaced with the misbehaviour that receives more attention. A basic principle of positive parenting is to praise behaviours you would like to see more often.
The “for the sake of the children” trap occurs when parents in unhappy marriages stick doggedly to the same marriage routines, for the sake of the children, rather than addressing the problems constructively.
The perfect parent trap. There is no such thing as a perfect parent and trying to be one will only lead to disappointment, resentment, guilt, and feelings of inadequacy.
The martyr trap is one where parents become so over-involved in the task of parenting they neglect their own needs. The parents’ relationship suffers and may end in feelings of dissatisfaction and resentment. Quality parenting can only happen when adults have their own lives in balance.
Mullaloo Heights PS are offering parenting support with Triple P, one of the world’s most highly-regarding parenting programs. This program is targeted for Kindy to Year 5 parents and will be held on Tuesday 8th May (Week 2 /Term 2) starting at 9am and will conclude at 2:30pm. Morning Tea and Lunch will be provided
If you wish to attend, drop into the front office, or call, to register your place for this free seminar. School contact number is 6206 2100. This event will be conducted by our local School Psychologist, Priscilla Grainger and visiting Psychologist Lauren Twomey. Please RSVP by May 2nd to book your place.
Please note that a ‘Teen’ – Year 5/6 Seminar will be offered in Term 3 on the 18th September.

Chaplain’s News
Dear parents,
I hope you had a great Easter and that you are looking forward to the holidays now!
The year 1’s and 2’s have loved being able to learn about our different school values this term and have enjoyed the fun activities and ‘Chaplain’s Challenge’ to help them apply the values to their lives. I am excited to continue running the values program and some small group programs for students into next term as well.
So far in Girls and Boys Club, the year 6’s have been able to participate in different competitions and games at lunchtime. They loved competing in dodgeball and tug-of-war, especially when all the year 6’s played together. The year 5’s have patiently been waiting and now they are excited for Boys and Girls Club to start for them next term.
This term the Chaplain’s Room has been open to the year 1’s at lunchtime. The room is full of many options for the students to choose from- including kinetic sand, play dough, loombands, board games, card games, the reading corner, card making, colouring and drawing. Here are some photos below of the year 1’s having fun in the Chaplain’s Room at lunchtime. Both the Girls and Boys Club and having the Chaplain’s Room open at lunchtimes have been a fun and effective way for me to build relationships with the students.

Please see the attached article on ‘Five ways to raise a balanced technology user’ by Martine Oglethorpe:
https://www.parentingideas.com.au/2018/03/role-parents-screen-time/
The little devices that connect us, entertain us, provide us with information, show us where to go, keep us organised and allow us to indulge in retail therapy from almost anywhere, have become an integral part of our daily lives.
But when it comes to our children and their screen-time habits, we often lament the role the devices play. These little screens that offer so much and answer so many of our needs also leave us wondering how much is too much for our kids, and how do we keep it under control? Following are five ways we can ensure that our children become safe, savvy and balanced technology users.
Kind regards,
Jess Smith
