Principal’s Message
Caroline Booth
This term has certainly given us much to celebrate. During the last school newsletter, I mentioned that our students were competing at the Interschool Athletics Carnival. I can now confirm that, as predicted, they did rather well. I’m must admit on visiting them in action, I was struck by the number of our students gaining ribbons for first, second and third. This combined success and team effort contributed to our school gaining fourth place. This, in itself, is pretty impressive, but the fact that we missed third place by just one point makes it even more so. We also won the Meritorious Shield which divides the amount of points scored by the number of students in the school. This gives a more accurate and fairer illustration of each school’s achievement, particularly for small schools with fewer children available to participate in these competitions. As I have already said, our students did a great job and, as always, ensured they behaved in a way that cemented our reputation as a courteous and sporting school. I think they, along with Mrs Thorby and her band of helpers deserve a huge pat on the back. Well done!
I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who attended our Open Night last night. It was great to see you being led around school by your children. The pride in their work was clear as they explained each work sample and learning experience. Many of you commented on the quality of the work and how wonderful the rooms looked. With this in mind, I wish to thank our staff who worked incredibly hard to ensure work was displayed beautifully. The evening was a great success and there was a real positive vibe around the place. I think this was largely due to our students, who were great tour guides. Thank you - your enthusiasm made the evening a very positive experience.

Planning for 2018
Our school is actively planning for the 2018 school year and to determine the staffing arrangements, we need to establish the number of students attending next year. If your children are not attending our school next year, please let us know as soon as possible. Your assistance with this matter is greatly appreciated.
Family Fun Day
As a school, we are rewarding our students’ hard work with our popular end of term event - the Family Fun day. This will take place on Tuesday 12th December and involve students working in mixed age groups through a number of fun activities before enjoying a pizza lunch, organised by the P&C, in the Undercover Area. We have organised 2 sessions so that our students gain maximum time on each activity; Pre-Primary - Year 2 students will begin at 9:00am, while Year 3-6 students will start after recess and finish at 12:40pm. Parents are very welcome to join us on what is going to be fantastic day and a memorable end to a great year; make sure you save the date. More information will follow about this event closer to the date.

Final Fund Raising Festival Friday 24th November
Our Year 6 students have spent the last week getting prepared for their annual end of term fundraising event. Formerly known as the Fun Fair, our students have rebranded the event with a new catchy name - Final Fundraising Festival - and the addition of a delicious cake stall. They started their planning by working in groups to brainstorm a huge range of enticing activities for our younger students to enjoy. This list was whittled down, after a lively discussion, to the best few and they now are in the process of organising equipment and leaders for each activity. This fun event will run just before lunchtime on Friday 24th November. Each activity will cost 50c or a $1, so younger students need to bring a few dollars in order to participate and also buy a cake. After witnessing the enthusiasm of our organisers, we can safely say this is going to be a lot of fun.
Pre Primary Assembly
Our Pre-Primary students performed the final assembly of the year and it was a marvellous finale to a year of outstanding assemblies. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house. The assembly was a true showcase of the huge progress they have made whilst in Pre-Primary. They spoke clearly and confidently and the standard of reading was incredible. It is hard to believe they have just completed their first full time year of schooling. It is a great illustration of the quality teaching and learning offered by our early childhood staff and the support given to their programmes by our parents. The next assembly will be the Book Award Assembly on Friday 1st December at 9:00am. Teachers are currently nominating students for awards and will be in touch with parents with regard to this.

Kindy Orientation Day
Our new Kindy students for 2018 had a blast at the Orientation morning last week. Parents and children were engrossed in the exciting activities provided by Mrs Marr to give them a taste of what life in Kindy will be like next year. As you can see from the photos, they can’t wait to start!

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Christmas is almost here and it’s the time of the year where The Salvation Army will support up to 5,000 families across Western Australia by providing Christmas hampers starting from mid-December. Many families in our state aren’t able to have a Christmas meal on Christmas Day because of financial constraints and many other factors. So this year The Salvation Army is looking to Mullaloo Heights Primary School for help in collecting non-perishable food items that can be given to families in need. This is a great opportunity to gift many families with an unforgettable Christmas.
Each classroom will receive their own basket and on Friday the 24th of November, students are invited to come to school in Christmas-themed free dress, with their tin of food to fill their classroom’s basket. The following week at the Book Awards Assembly on Friday the 1st of December, all the baskets will be displayed and collected by a Salvation Army team member, who will thank the school personally on behalf of all the families who will be receiving a basket this Christmas.
Please see below for food ideas. I am so excited to see all the baskets filled!
Here are some suggested items that students can bring to school on Friday, 24th November:
Suggested Items
Non-perishable food items and groceries urgently required this Christmas
Tinned Foods
- Tinned fruit/fruit salad
- Tinned vegetables (eg. Peas, carrots, corn, beetroot)
- Packet and tinned soups
- Tinned spaghetti and baked beans
- Tinned tuna and other fish, tinned ham, canned meals, etc
Treats
- Chocolate, bags of lollies
- Sweet and chocolate biscuits
- Savoury biscuits/crackers
- Potato chips
- Popcorn (pre-popped or microwavable)
- Fruit cups, jelly crystals, Ice Magic, cake mix, Shake ‘n’ Bake pancake mix, jam, honey, vegemite, peanut butter
Beverages
- Long-life milk
- Tea, coffee, sugar
- Milo, Quik
- Cordial, soft drink
- Long-life juice
Cereals and Carbohydrates
- Breakfast cereals and muesli
- Instant noodles, two-minute noodles, instant pasta packs
- Rice, pasta/spaghetti, pasta sauce
- Rice sauce (eg. Kan Tong, Chicken Toinight)
- Muesli bars
- Rice Cakes
Extras for Christmas
- Bonbons
- Candy canes
- Christmas puddings/cakes
- Long-life or boxed custard
HANDY HINTS from the Salvation Army:
Ring-pull tins are preferred! Tins with ring-pull are most helpful, as not all people receiving the food will necessarily have access to a can opener.
Long expiry dates please. Please ensure foods are non-perishable and their expiry dates are well into next year.
Please avoid ‘non-name’ brands. Wherever possible, please refrain from purchasing non-name brands as people will be receiving these goods as a gift. This is a simple way to make our ‘battling’ Aussies feel a little extra special at Christmas.
Kind regards,
Jess Smith (Chaplain)

P& C News
The last P&C meeting for 2017 was held on Wednesday, 8th November, and Leisa Bellevret (née Scully) was welcomed to the role of Secretary. Thank you Leisa for stepping up to take this position.
Talking about volunteering, did you know it’s good for your health and guess what, two volunteers are desperately needed to help out with school banking for next year. It’s only about 40 mins every Wednesday morning, with data entry and counting of the money also. It’s a great way to meet the students and your kids love seeing you help out. If you are interested please contact Shannon Bilich. Without volunteers school banking will not be available next year.
The P&C has had some great fundraising events recently. The rocking fun of Bogan Bingo, pizza for the kids, wine for the parents, self-defence classes and Crazy Camel all together raised $3,760.
Thank you to everyone who participated and especially the awesome organisers Angie Taylor, Katherine Biddle, Claire Johnson and Marguarete Wettstein and everyone else who helped. Great teamwork to raise money for our kids school.
So after all that fun and fundraising the Committee agreed to a bit of spending.
For the year 6’s end of year excursion to Outback Splash - $20.00 per child!
For the Whole School Family Fun day $700.00, for the slip ‘n’ slide and bouncy castle. And to add to the day and feed the hungry kids, Claire Johnson will be organising pizza. There’ll be a free icy pole for the kids too.
Other coming events supported by the P & C are the;
Awesome kids morning tea - $50; School Dux Award; and the Scholastic buy one get one free book fair which was on Thursday evening from 5 - 7 as part of the open night. But wait there’s more! Tonight is the Winter Wonderland P&C school disco from 5 - 7pm in the undercover area. Big thanks to Kylie Squires and Louise Hall for organising!
And still more, save the date, a Family Colour Run planned for Friday 16th March 2018.
Don’t forget school banking needs you!
