Principal’s Message
Caroline Booth
We have had a great start to Term 3 with our students’ enthusiasm and hard work paying dividends. One example of this is the recent Interschool Cross Country Competition in which a number of our students participated. As always, they embraced the event with zeal, determined to do their best and were justly rewarded by achieving 3rd place as a team. This is pretty big achievement when you consider how relatively small the student population of Mullaloo Heights compared to many of the other schools competing. Hard work and commitment certainly paid a part in this success. Another pleasing aspect of this event was the feedback we received regarding the way in which our students conducted themselves while participating. Our students were well mannered and respectful to both adults and other students taking part and this was commented on. While representing our school, our students always rise to the occasion, wearing their uniform with pride and explicitly displaying our school values. The next opportunity our students will be on show is at the One Voice Concert next week. I have no doubt that once again they will do us proud and, for this reason, I am looking forward to joining them.
Meanwhile, the teachers back at school have been preparing for Book Week - our favourite way of celebrating literature. Please make a note of the information outlined later in the newsletter so that you know what is happening and can join in the fun. We hope to see you at some of the events.

Room 6 treated us to a French extravaganza during their recent assembly. Excellent conversational French, chic costumes and tuneful songs were the order of the day. We were impressed with their language skills and their knowledge of French facts; they certainly taught us all a thing or two. Most importantly, they knew are clearly enjoying the foreign language program at Mullaloo Heights. Tres bon, Room 6.

Out and About at Mullaloo Heights - Science
The Year 5/6 students have been busy investigating the different conditions that mould likes to grow in best as part of their Biological Science studies. They have undertaken this unit with great excitement and Mr Adlam has been very impressed with their positive attitude towards the lessons and their great results – even though some students found the results hard to look at!
Our roving camera caught some of the action during a recent lesson.

Interschool Cross Country
Last week, on Wednesday, 2nd August, Mullaloo Heights students participated in the annual Interschool Cross Country held at McDonald Reserve in Padbury.
All the hard work the students put in paid off, with Mullaloo Heights placing 3rd overall! Huge congratulations to all the students who ran their best for our school and achieved our amazing result!
Thank you to Mrs Smith, Mr Adlam and Mr Heron for their help on the day and to the parents who were able to come down to cheer on our students.

Talk 4 Writing
Our students have really embraced our literacy program, Talk 4 Writing, and this has led to some amazing writing. Our Y5/6 students recently worked on creating suspenseful narratives with chilling results. Enjoy this selection from Rm 11 & 12, but be warned, it’s probably best not to read them while you’re alone.
Book Week is Coming!
Book Week takes place from 28th August - 1st September and is going to be a great week. Put the following dates in your diary and come along to any of the events that interest you.
- Literacy Rotation – Monday 28th August
Students will work in mixed groups, Pre-primary to Year 6, to complete a number of short tasks related to books. Older students will help and support the younger children as they move around school to complete fun activities, such as going on a bear hunt, creating illustrations for texts and trialling an interactive book quiz, just to name few. Activities will take place between 9:00am and 12:00pm. Parents are welcome to help. Just let your child’s class teacher know.
- Guess the Book Competition – Daily
Clues related to children’s books will be placed in the library every day. Students examine them, make a guess at the title of the book and post their answer in the entry box. A junior (PP-Y2) and Senior (Y3-6) winner will be drawn daily. The library will be open at 8:30am and 2:50pm for children to try their luck.
- Drop Everything and Read – Daily
When they hear the signal, everyone, wherever they are and whatever they are doing, must stop and pick up their book to read. Parent helpers, if you are in school during Book week, don’t forget to bring your book just in case the signal is made during your visit.
- Book Based Project and Writing Competition
All students will be working on a project based on a particular book during this week. Talk to your child’s teacher to find out which one. One of the activities will be to produce a book cover complete with illustration and blurb for the selected title. Their work will be judged and a winner and runner up for each year group will be announced at the end of Book Week during our special assembly.
- Super Duper Musical – Tuesday 29th August
Students from Kindy to Year 4 get to watch a musical extravaganza based on the theme, Escape to Everywhere and titled Super Duper. This performance incorporates shortlisted titles from the Children’s Book Council Awards for 2017 into an action-packed adventure that promotes reading, not just as entertainment, but also as a means of understanding the world around us. The cost for this incursion is $3.00. Notes with more information have been sent home. Please collect one from the office if you have mislaid yours.
- Mad Hatter’s Tea Party – Thursday 31st August
All parents are welcome to come and join us for this wacky lunch in the Undercover Area, as long as you don a silly hat. Please send a plate to share – one per family (sweet for girls, savoury for boys) and join the fun. See you there at 12:15pm.
- Get Caught Reading Raffle
This week all members of staff will be watching the children carefully in an attempt to catch them reading. Each time they do so, they will give the student a raffle ticket to post in the Reading Raffle Box. Raffle tickets will be drawn on Friday 1st September and a few lucky winners will select a prize from the office. This is definitely the week to ‘get caught reading’.
- Extreme Reading Display - Escape to Everywhere
This year’s challenge is for the students to produce a picture showing how a book has helped them escape. The picture can either be a photograph of a real life place or a drawing of an imaginary place, but both versions must contain a picture of the student reading. Last year’s Extreme Reading inspired some great photos so we’re anticipating many creative and unusual pictures. All pictures /photos should be handed in to the office and will be displayed in the Undercover Area during Book Week.
- Guest Readers
There will be a few surprise readers, from the local community and beyond, visiting to share their favourite stories with our students.
- Dress as your favourite book character – Friday 1st September
Students get to leave their uniform at home and spend the day dressed as a favourite book character. Prizes will be awarded for creative costumes.
- Book Assembly – Friday 1st September
We will be having a special assembly at 11:15am to view everyone’s costumes. Prizes for the writing competition and most creative dress ups will also be presented. We will conclude the assembly and Book Week with a special performance of ‘Beegu Goes Home’.
