Principal’s Message

Caroline Booth

The holidays are nearly upon us and I think you’ll agree the break has been well earned by our hardworking students. They have given total commitment to every activity and event thrust upon them throughout this busy term. Sports, literature, history and music have defined the term so it is fitting that our final assembly was a celebration of the wide variety of interests and talents of our students. The Talent Assembly is a popular event with many students auditioning. The standard for participation is always high and watching the final, polished performance is a real treat. This year was no exception. Well done to all students who overcame nerves and bravely participated in this wonderful show. Thanks also to Mrs Ameduri for giving our students the opportunity to showcase their considerable talent and creativity.

I’m sure we’re all looking forward to the fortnight break. It is certainly well deserved by students, staff and our numerous parent volunteers. Enjoy it, but keep safe. Students remember everything you have been told regarding stranger danger (see advice below) and road safety. Make sure you wear your helmet when cycling and be vigilant when crossing the road. We look forward to seeing you all back on Tuesday 18th July.

Have a safe holiday

Caroline Booth

Awesome Kids’ Morning Tea

Our very first Awesome Kids’ Morning Tea was an undisputed success. This initiative, sponsored by the P&C and catered for by Mrs Bree Strachan, saw deserving representatives from each classroom enjoying a special picnic with Ms Booth and Mr Adlam in the library. This was a reward for their good manners, positive attitude and hard work throughout the term. This will be a regular feature of each term, with teachers selecting worthy attendees. Here are some pictures of the tasty treats on offer.

Australian Choir – Philippa Kapp

Earlier this year, Year 5 student Philippa Kapp, auditioned for a place on the 2017 Australian Girls’ Choir and was one of only eleven girls from Western Australia who was selected for the 2017 National Tour. Philippa has an amazing voice and a real passion for music so it is very pleasing to see her awarded this recognition and great opportunity. As you are reading this, Philippa has already flown to Melbourne where the entire group has met and final preparations made before their performances in Victoria and Tasmania in late June and early July. We look forward to her return in Term 3 to hear about her amazing journey.

We are all very proud of you Philippa and you may hear a lot more of this name and voice in the future! Congratulation, Philippa!

Australian Judo Championships:

They say ‘practise makes perfect’ and Owen Moorhouse (Year 6) and Daniel Moorhouse (Year 4) have proved this statement to be correct.

The brothers have been participating in the sport of Judo for around five years and have recently stepped up their training to nearly every day as they prepared for the Australian Judo Nation Championships that were held in the Gold Coast recently. The three day tournament gathered the best judo athletes from around the country.

Both brothers achieved outstanding results at this event. Owen competed in the Junior Boys, Under 38kg division and achieved first place securing the Gold Medal.

Daniel competed in the Junior Boys 42kg division and gained second place and was awarded the Silver Medal.

Both Owen and Daniel can be very proud of their achievements, as we are of them here at Mullaloo Heights Primary School. A fantastic effort by the brothers and good luck with your future endeavours with this sport.

Talent Assembly

An entertaining talent assembly from students across the school kept us entertained last week. It was great to see the students presenting a variety of skills. We thoroughly enjoyed watching, but not half as much as they enjoyed performing. Enjoy the photos.

Periwinkle Park

The Year 3/4 students from Room 10 at Mullaloo Heights Primary School have been participating in tree planting at Periwinkle Park recently. This is a partnership between the school, Friends of Periwinkle Park Community Group and the City of Joondalup.

The whole exercise has been a great success. The students love getting their hands dirty, learning about key environment aspects and working face-to-face with members of the local community while having a positive impact on our local environment.

We are proud of our long-standing relationship Mullaloo Heights Primary School has with the Friends of Periwinkle Park and the City of Joondalup and look forward to maintaining this in the future. Thanks to all the students for their hard work and the Friends of Periwinkle Community group and The City of Joondalup for their on-going support of this project.

Have a look at photos of the students working hard on this project.

Stranger Danger

We would also like to remind you to keep safe when you are walking by yourself. Here are some things you can do:

  • Always walk with a friend
  • Always walk on the right hand side of the road so that cars are driving towards you
  • Don’t walk too close to the road.
  • Stay in view – don’t go into hidden areas like behind bushes or shopping centres
  • If you are worried by an stranger’s behaviour, tell a trusted adult – your parents or a teacher
  • When walking from school, always go straight home.

Chaplain’s Corner

Dear parents,

I can’t believe we have already finished one semester of school! It has been a great term with lots of new and exciting things happening in Chaplaincy.

The year 5’s and 6’s in room 11 have loved doing the BUZ program on Thursdays. Recently we have discussed conflict resolution and how they can solve problems using the ‘BUZ Hopscotch Method’ of resolution. This involves making the conscious choice to stop during the fight before it gets out of hand, and then both people having the opportunity to talk about why they are upset or angry and listening while the other person speaks. This is followed by working out what the problem was that caused the conflict or disagreement, and then agreeing on an idea that could fix the problem.

The year 3’s and 4’s in room 9 have also just completed the BUZ Hopscotch Method of resolution and discussed the importance of forgiveness in restoring a friendship and resolving conflicts.

The year 5 and 6 girls have felt special being able to spend their Friday lunchtimes in Girl’s Club making friendship bracelets, flower headbands and getting to build relationships with one another. The rest of the girls are excited to have their turn next term.

I hope you all have a great break over the holidays and I look forward to seeing you next term.

Please see the article below on ‘Why first borns fuss, seconds are resilient and last borns like to laugh’ by Michael Grose.

How can two or three children in the same family be so different? They are brought up in the same broad social environment, under a similar set of rules and an identical family value system. They also come from the same genetic pool yet they can be so different in personality, interests and achievement. While they may be born into the same family they are not born into the same position. The effects of their birth position have a significant impact on children, their behaviour and their personalities. In order to really understand children it is useful to look at how their position in the family impacts on their development.

P&C News

How great is the new nature play area! One of the challenges for our school is updating and maintaining its ageing infrastructure so our children have a safe and fun environment to learn in, and a school that they are also proud of. Unfortunately these improvements are costly. So, at the recent P & C meeting, the members agreed to help fund the nature play area to tune of $11,000.

Now that is a significant amount of money coming out of the kitty. Thankfully, Angie Taylor our Fundraising Coordinator, came to the meeting with a plan for fundraising activities. Stay tuned for details and get ready for some fun.

It was also agreed to retrospectively contribute $2.50 per child for the recent Music Viva incursion.
