Principal’s Message

Caroline Booth

It’s been a fortnight where the parental support of our school has been particularly evident. Although this is always a prominent feature of Mullaloo Heights, it has manifested itself in many more ways recently. It is well known that our parents regularly donate their time. The canteen is run by a core of committed volunteers who put immense effort into providing nutritional and tasty bites on Wednesdays. School banking, again organised by parents, allows our students to save and begin to appreciate the value of money, while our parent rosters for reading and helping in classrooms are always full. However, in addition to this traditional support, lately there has been a furore of further assistance. Our students in Year 4-6 are currently preparing to compete in the Interschool Lightning Carnival under the guidance of teachers and also a group of dedicated parents. It has been wonderful to witness these volunteers share their knowledge and skills with the students each week, as well as their passion for each particular sport. Teachers have been very appreciative of the help and the students are feeling very confident about the forthcoming competition as a result of this extra input. Last week, a Mother’s Day stall was organised so that our students could treat their mums to something special and chocolate frogs were donated to the participants in NAPLAN as a reward for a week of hard work. The list goes on; those of you who follow our Facebook page will know a cubby house was recently contributed and delivered to our Early Childhood Unit and that next week’s Book Fair and associated competitions have been arranged by parents. Finally, an Awesome Kids Morning Tea is currently being organised to celebrate and acknowledge the positive attitude and efforts of our children - again the work of a parent. There are many innovative ideas that come from our parents that add to our school programs. This collaboration between school and community enriches the school experience for our students and allows teachers to concentrate their time and effort on teaching and learning. It also creates the safe and welcoming environment that characterises Mullaloo Heights and is so often commented on by visitors to the school. Thank you for your ongoing support and contribution.

With this in mind, we ask for one more act of support. We are currently inviting enrolments for Kindy and Pre-Primary 2018 and will be hosting an Open Day for potential students in this age group on Saturday 10th June. Please save the date and let eligible friends, neighbours and acquaintances know about this exciting new event. More information will follow.

Have a lovely weekend.

Room 12’s Assembly

After watching their assembly yesterday, we can safely say that Room 12 have acquired excellent skills of persuasion. After posing the question, ‘Which sport is the best - AFL, soccer, netball or gymnastics?’, they used a number of clever texts, ingenious adverts and persuasive devises to argue each case. It was very hard to choose a favourite as each sport came with a pretty convincing argument. It was great to see our students applying the skills they’ve learnt in class to produce such a powerful debate. Well done, Room 12.

Aussie of the Month

Congratulations, Grace in Room 6.

Grace was awarded Aussie of the month for displaying the values of empathy, compassion and respect. Grace is sensitive to the needs of others and goes out of her way to ensure that other class members feel valued. She is always happy to include others in her games and is able to compromise. Grace brings a sense of well-being and fairness to our classroom. Well done and thank you, Grace - you are a deserving Aussie.

Out and About at Mullaloo Heights!

Our roving camera caught the Kindy students working on their footy skills recently. Footy Fundamentals paid them a visit and taught them a few skills. As you can see from our picture, there was plenty of talent on show. We’re sure it won’t be long before scouts for the Dockers and Eagles are knocking on our door. In the meantime, our kindys are having great fun practising. Enjoy our photos.

Mother’s Day

We hope all mums had a lovely day and were spoiled by your family. As you can see, our students put plenty of thought into making sure mums were pampered and rewarded with a thoughtful gift.

Music News

Term 2 looks like being a busy and eventful time in Music at MHPS.

We have an exciting new SCHOOL SONG called" STRIVE" which the students in Rooms 11 and 12 began working on last term. We commissioned a professional songwriter to develop the melody and incorporate the ideas (lyrics, style, format etc) that we devised. The final product is almost ready and we look forward to performing STRIVE at our assemblies.

ZEEKO (a trio from Musica Viva in Schools) will be performing for us on the 20th June here at our school. This visit culminates many weeks of work and fun activities in music classes. A note will be emailed to you with details of the cost later in the term.

Also in week 9, our annual TALENT ASSEMBLY will take place. I have been running this for several years now, but will briefly explain for new families to our school. This assembly is open to individual students (or groups) who wish to showcase an entertaining skill or talent. It can be vocal, dance, instrumental, drama or anything (eg gymnastics) that can be performed to an audience. Students fill out a form, rehearse and come to auditions at school. I will inform the students of days and times to come. If successful, they are included in this assembly. This is not a competition, rather, it is a fun welcoming opportunity for individuals to perform in front of the school community.

Finally, I am seeking TWO PARENT HELPERS, to assist me with the choir students at the ONE BIG VOICE concert on Friday 18th August at Perth Arena. If your child is in the choir, and you are available and interested, please see me for the details.

P&C News

The P & C now have a Fundraising Coordinator. Angie Taylor offered to change hats from the School Board representative position. Huge thanks Angie. Please give her all the support she needs. Teresa Bryant has volunteered to take on Angie's role with the school board.

At the meeting held on 10 May the Committee agreed to funding prizes for the book week pirate ship competition. Last year’s book week raised a whopping credit of $1400 for the school to spend on books. So don't forget to grab a book or two for the kids. The more we spend the more credit the school will receive.

The Committee has also previously agreed to fund a variety of requests from the school including:

Books for Literacy Pro: $2000 .00
iPads for Pre Primary: $3396.20
STEM resources: $2000.00
Value passport prizes: $500.00
Netball goal posts: $1720.00
The Fathering Project: $1500.00

That's over $10,000!
