Principal’s Message
As I write, students are in the middle of enjoying Harmony Week. So far it has been a great success, with students taking part in a whole heap of activities to promote acceptance, empathy and the appreciation of individual and cultural difference. Bernard Mangakahia (MANA), a visiting Polynesian performer, got the week off to an energetic start. His performance was infectious, involving a range of stories, songs and dance moves. Before we knew it, students and staff were on their feet, attempting to replicate his moves, rhythms and music. The visit was an uplifting experience and one I don’t think we’ll forget any time soon. Meanwhile in classrooms, students’ creative juices are flowing as they busily devise poems and drawings inspired by the idea that everyone belongs. This work will be displayed around the school allowing all students to view one another’s ideas, as well as parents and visitors. We are keenly anticipating the finished products later this week. It goes without saying that we hope to see you on Friday at our shared picnic when the celebrations come to a conclusion. Remember to wear something bright and send a plate of food to share - 1 per family.
Before I finish, I wish to thank parents for supporting our recent Parent Consultation Evenings. Many of you took the opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher and I am sure found this useful in finding how best to support your child on their learning journey this year. We received considerable positive feedback with regard to the meetings with much focussing on the work our teachers do with the children. This recognition of their hard work, in conjunction with your continued support of the school, is very much appreciated by all of our staff - thank you! Remember that we have a policy of continued open communication at Mullaloo Heights and should you need talk with your child’s teacher or clarify an aspect of the learning programme in the future, you are welcome to make a further appointment to chat.

What Happened at Camp?
Our Year 6 students had a great time at Fairbridge Village. Here are some their best memories.
‘I enjoyed doing activities that focused on team work. The high ropes were hard. My partner had to instruct me what to do. I managed to get all the way around.’ Ayesha.
‘The high ropes were my favourite because it my shoe fell off and Patty could not fling it back up to me. I still managed to finish the course.’ Holli
‘The giant swing was fun, but it was scary to jump off the platform.’ Daniel M
‘The abseiling was very scary. The instructor put his foot on mine and made me lean backwards. I felt like I was going to fall, but I didn’t. I got all the way down safely.’ Zack
‘The flying fox was great fun and I took the challenge of leaning over the edge and falling backwards. It felt amazing!’ Madison
‘The biggest challenge was the abseiling because it was so high. I did manage to do it and I felt proud.’ Jack
‘I was happy that I had a go at everything. The best was the high ropes. Camp was a lot of fun.’ Tom
‘The most exciting thing was the giant swing. I got butterflies in my tummy when I jumped off. It was great fun though.’ Zoe

Assembly - Room 9
We all enjoyed watching and listening to the students in Room 9 present the story, ‘Adventure at Sandy Cove’ at their assembly. Their energetic oral retell was the result of their work on Talk 4 writing, our whole school literacy program. This program has not only resulted in fantastic oral work, but some highly creative writing too. Well done Room 9 for presenting a great assembly.

Harmony Week: MANA Pays a Visit
Bernard Mangakahia (MANA) got Harmony Week off to an energetic start. Here’s a taste of the action.

Out and About at Mullaloo Heights!
This week, the roving paid a visit to all classrooms in search of Harmony Week activities. As you can see from the pictures, students spent the week exploring inclusivity and acceptance in many creative ways: writing, reading, drawing and talking. Students at Mullaloo Heights clearly believe that everyone belongs.

Chaplain’s Corner
Dear Parents,
I can’t believe that we are more than half way through term 1! The year has begun with lots of excitement as I have introduced the ‘Cooking Club’ where a small group of students from years 3-6 are invited to do cooking at lunchtime. The students have loved being able to cook and eat yummy treats as well as getting to know students who are younger or older than themselves. I am looking forward to what we will do next term in Cooking Club and to having more students join!
Another highlight this term has been the Year 6 camp at Fairbridge. I loved being able to attend for their final day and to see the students encourage and cheer each other on in their tasks! I also loved seeing them help the staff at Fairbridge when they ran their activities for the students and how they took initiative and responsibility to do so.
The BUZ Program has also started off as a great success with the year 5’s and 6’s in room 11. So far the students have learnt about their strengths, how to develop their skills in making friends and how to cooperate when working to achieve a task. I think the highlight so far has been the game ‘stand up’. Students were split into pairs and had to start by sitting on the floor back to back, with their arms linked and their knees up and had to work together to stand up from their position. The game taught them that when they thought of their partner and helped them to get up; they were actually able to stand up straight away and achieve their goal much quicker than if they just focused on trying to get themselves up, which can be applied to any task or challenge.
I am looking forward to continuing with Cooking Club and the BUZ Program this year!
Kind regards,
Jess

From the French Room
Restons Branchée (Staying connected)
Bonjour à tous!
For Harmony day our junior French classes designed “Les Caps de Respect” (“Capes of Respect”) to show their super powers which is the ability to show respect to someone else especially when they are a new student in the language room.
Senior children discussed the cultural differences which we need to understand between Australian and French eating habits. Many students are quite amazed to discover frog’s legs, snails, pigeons, offal, rabbit and horsemeat can be on “la menue”! Let’s hope we have some great posters!
Any “Francophiles” (anyone mad about anything French) may like to be reminded that it is French Film Festival Time.
The 2017 Alliance Française French Film Festival is currently running in Perth for its 28th edition from 15 March to 5 April!

Don't miss out on this long awaited once-a-year event!
Venues Cinema Paradiso, Northbridge and Luna on Essex, Fremantle.
Finally I wish to thank the students from Yr 5/6 who gave me a beautiful accolade last Friday. I was presented with some lovely flowers from Philippa’s garden and a beautiful note signed by her class mates which said-
“Thank you for teaching all 240 kids in our school. If you did not teach us we would all be oblivious to the world”
Amitiés, (warm regards)
